How to Evaluate Supplement Claims

A framework for separating seller claims, ingredient research and evidence about a finished product.

Three evidence buckets

  1. Seller claim: what the marketer says.
  2. Ingredient evidence: research on an ingredient, form or dose.
  3. Finished-product evidence: research on the actual formula being sold.

Do not silently substitute one bucket for another.

Regulatory baseline

FDA distinguishes health, nutrient-content and structure/function claims. FTC guidance says health-related advertising must be truthful, not misleading, and adequately substantiated.
